News and (Dumb) Notes from Game 5 in Detroit
Lakers, shmakers, how 'bout some real athletes?
Saturday I was in Detroit at the Joe Louis Arena (my Mecca) for Game 5 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals. Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood earned had a shutout and I enjoyed one of the best days of my drab, dismal life. I know this is not typically the case when folks spend a day in Detroit, but, hey, I'm not your average girl.
Here are a few sketches of a very fine day:
This is a group of fans gathered to shoot a promo for "Hockey Night in Canada." We watched them go through about 17 takes because the girl they selected to say "Welcome to Hockey Night in Canada" kept saying "Welcome to Hockey Time in Canada." Eventually the group of Penguins and Red Wings fans were able to unite in a common hatred of this girl who kept making them have to start over.
I previously stated that I find pink sports memorabilia unacceptable. I'd like to amend that statement. The only time it is acceptable and, in fact, fully fitting and appropriate is when the article of clothing in question is a pink Sidney Cindy Crosby jersey.
Favorite sign of the game? "Women in Sports: Support Cindy Crosby"
Another epic sports gear fail? This girl, who decided white stilettos to a pregame party (on grass!) made a classy choice (not to mention her hairdo and choice in pants).
And speaking of sports gear fails...
There were two Pittsburgh fans sitting next to us at the game. I generally respect fans that throw caution to the wind and attend games on enemy turf - but these guys were wearing jeans and button down shirts - no Penguins gear. What is up with that? If you're gonna go so far as to attend a game at the Joe and cheer against the home team (not that they had much anything to cheer about Saturday), at least have the "pucks" to rock your colors proudly. These Red Wings fans get it. Get a bigger knob, Pittsburgh (that was a hockey innuendo).
Our group sported jerseys, but we also made this impromptu anti-Crosby tee with an undershirt and Sharpie markers and it was quite a hit.
Game 6 is tomorrow night. Red Wings are up three games to two. I will not speculate on the outcome of Tuesday's game, because, as a good hockey fan, I am insanely superstitious. I won't make predictions about the outcome of a game, I won't wash my jersey and I always wear red underwear on game days (this weekend, I discovered my other hockey watching buddies do too). I had no clean laundry for Game 4, had to break this rule and look what happened.
Go Wings!!!

Funny... I've never heard anyone call Sidney - Cindy... you are very funny and clever...
Crosbyotch.. wow, clever as well.
Screw the Redwings, Pens in 7.

I do not understand the pink jerseys unless it is for breast cancer support. I also don't understand why women must insist on stilettos. Not smart I see it all the time at the arena.

If you guys are gonna do this "my personal journal" thing on a regular basis, maybe you should make a different part of the site for that, instead of lumping it in with the "dumb criminal" stories.

I can't condone the jeans and button down shirts but sometimes, discretion is the better part of valor and there are certain towns (more accurately, parts of certain towns) where two men in a rival teams colors are really just setting themselves up for a bad time. Maybe not at the actual game but more likely in the parking lot on the way to the car or walking back to the subway station etc. Don't even get me started on Soccer aka Football, those dudes will shank ya' in a dark alley for wearing the wrong colors.
Other than that, red undies huh? lol, sorry :)

One game for all the marbles. It will be nice to see the Penguins skate around the Joe carrying the cup.

@Pens Stanley Cup
Red Wings suck?
They only lost 2-1 last night, and Friday's game seven will be the Wings 31st game in the Stanley Cup finals over the last 15 years. In that time, Detroit has had exactly zero draft picks in the top ten, which means they never had to rebuild. That's impressive as hell.
Pittsburgh has had at least 5 draft picks in the top ten over that same period, and far less to show for it.
I'm not a Red Wings fan either, but to say "Red Wings suck" is just plain, dumb.
Come to think of it, you picked the right blog to comment on.

Ritch,
Fair enough, yet I'm sure you got a great chuckle out of the Crosbyotch and Cindy comments.
An antagonistic blog beggets an antagonistic response.
We'll see on Friday who is the better team until then..

Ritch,
Oh, and by the way you cite the dominance of the Red Wings over the past 15 years. You might be too young to remember them being called the Dead Wings because they sucked so bad for so long. So yes, they might have been on a tear for a while now, but they aren't that far removed from having high first round picks.
Till tonight....

Need I remind you that Crosby is minus 3 in this series? Red Wing Justin Abdelkader, who played in the minors the entire regular season, has more goals than Crosby this series. I will give Malkin credit, but I think all my comments about Crosby are quite legit. You're going down tonight. No one beats the Red Wings at the Joe. Fleury's butt will probably get another ASS-ist from the boards.

You can remind me all you want, after you lose tonight.... oh and that $7 million signing of Hossa - how's that workin' out for you. (BTW, he has more goals than Hossa as well.... of course so does everyone else who has scored a goal in the series). Your comments about Crosby don't matter a damn to me and are nothing any other oponent hasn't come up with before.... hence my original post about how clever you are.... get it sarcasm.)
I usually give Detroit credit, but a smack talking post deserves a smack talking response.
RED WINGS SUCK.
Signed, your 2008-2009 Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

Thats OK, don't post my earlier response.
The story has been written... Pens win, Red Wings lose.... too bad so sad.
Sucks to be you Hossa.
