Dumb or Clever? Consumers Rick Roll Telemarketers

Share

Have you recently received numerous phone calls telling you your auto warranty is about to expire?

I have (and I don't even own a car) and, apparently, so has half of America.

Well, we're not taking it anymore!

Consumers sick of getting these calls have traced them to Auto One Warranty Specialists Inc., an Irvine, CA company, and have started to fight back in some truly creative ways, most involving leaving annoying messages on Auto One's phone system. My favorite comes from 22-year-old laboratory technician Michael Silveira, who decided to telephonically "Rick Roll" the company by leaving a recording of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" on the machine.

Consumers taking matters into their own hands are warned that they are treading in dangerous waters, so if you want to handle things all legally and stuff, there are also three lawsuits pending against the telemarketers hired by companies like Auto One.

The full story is in this video (wow, WSJ, you're so 2009!):
