Dumb As A Blog Faceoff: The True Story
Yes, it's true, Sam and I faced off yesterday as the heroic, scrappy Mighty Squirrels ultimately went down in defeat to the cold, industrial, emotionless automatons known as the Skyfighters. And despite earlier, fraudulent reports, the score was only 5-1.
(Perhaps Sam is counting the point blank shot on goal she missed in the second half)
For fans of the cinema, I'll remind you that despite the fact that Rocky technically “lost” his title shot with Apollo Creed, there was an even bigger winner that day: America. And, to a smaller degree, racists from Philadelphia. But that's neither here nor there.
Despite a hard fought game that was separated by only a single goal at halftime, two factors contributed to the opening of the floodgates in the second:
1) The Skyfighters recruit Canadians.
They have a defenseman named Martin, who is a ringer, and Canadian. He's a nice enough guy, and yes, technically, they are allowed to have anybody they want on their team, but let's put it this way: If Sam and I were to face each other in mixed gymnastics, and I just happened to show up with an eight-year-old Russian girl as my partner, people might talk.
2) The Skyfighters actually hold PRACTICES.
You heard me. A weekend, co-ed, sneaker hockey league, and they get together and practice? Good lord. If I had the time to set up off site practices for my hipster ball hockey team, I might just consider using that time to, oh, I don't know, learn how to ice skate.
As the Mighty Squirrels say: GO NUTS!
Actually, Martin is from the country formerly known as Czechoslovakia (I'm not sure which half, though). Our goaltender (me) and at least one forward (Greg) are, however, Canadian.
And, if you'll refer to the official BTSH box score, you will notice that the final tally was indeed 6-1.
Looks like some fact-checking (and maybe some body-checking...oh yeah! he went there!) is in order.

PS: We have a Canadian too, (Pat Larsen) but he's a Senators fan, so I like to think that doesn't count.
