Someone in Virginia used those materials to create, hands down, the most frightening costume in America this year: a seven-year-old in a KKK outfit. Talk about a costume that will send people running.
Possibly, the most terror-inducing part is that the mother doesn’t seem to think the whole is a big deal.
The debacle began when someone saw the costume and posted a photo of it on a news station’s web site. As KRON reports, “[The child's mother] Jessica Black is defending the costume as outrage grows at her nonchalant reaction to the photo,” continuing that “she sees nothing wrong with letting her son dress up as a member of the Ku Klux Klan for Halloween.”
Though it’s not clear how the child came up with that costume, it’s hard to imagine he suddenly blurted out, “Mommy, I want to be a racist for Halloween!” And I doubt he wanted to dress as the characters from his favorite movie, Birth of a Nation. More likely, someone thought, “This is hilarious,” and send the kid out with almost no regard for how much it would effect the amount of candy he got.
Or maybe it was just a part of his mother’s costume: Bad Decision Mommy. It comes complete with a child in a Klan uniform, a nonchalant expression and a love of cultural insensitivity.
