A Florida man is getting a lot of grief for grieving the loss of his fiancee by spreading her ashes in the Westfield Southgate Mall on Tuesday.
According to My Fox Tampa Bay, an evacuation of the mall was triggered when witnesses saw a man scattering a mysterious white powder, specifically tossing some in a LensCrafters store.
Fire trucks, police and a hazmat team were called over the incident. Investigators later discovered it was a grieving man spreading the cremated remains of his fiancee around the local mall which seemed to hold a special place in her heart. And why not? I can’t think of a better place to spend all of eternity than next to an Auntie Anne’s Pretzels. What a great smell!
The police aren’t releasing the man’s name but did say he had no criminal intent, and since human ashes aren’t exactly a hazardous material, he won’t be charged with a crime.
Lt. Pat Ledwith of the Bureau of Criminal Investigations said, “He did not realize the commotion he’d cause over it.”
You may think spreading a loved one’s ashes in a LensCrafters may be dumb but I disagree. As someone who’s had to wear glasses his whole life, finding that perfect pair is just as memorable a moment as getting a college diploma.
Of course, if you’re going to spread white powder in a crowded mall, you may want to let people know first. Though I’m not sure it’s easy to get a permit to dump anything in a mall, let alone human remains.
