Shoppers love Walmart because they can buy anything under one roof at “always low prices.” But customers were less enthusiastic when the retailer decided to add a creepy kids’ Halloween costume to their shelves… regardless of the cost.
KATU News originally reported that Walmart was selling a costume for toddlers called the “Naughty Leopard.” The costume comes complete with a dress and headpiece. The only thing missing from the package is an alcohol flask filled with regret.
The costume itself doesn’t look “naughty” or even like a leopard for that matter. It just looks like a black and purple ballerina dress with cat ears. Not that you can blame marketing for seeing the lack of appeal in a “Dancing Panther” costume.
You could even argue that the word “naughty” doesn’t necessarily have to mean anything sexual. It could be that this particular leopard just doesn’t like to clean her room. And on any other day that would be an acceptable excuse, except for on Halloween — a holiday that stopped being about candy and ghosts around the time it found its way into sorority houses (as you can clearly see here in our 20 Crazy Sexy Halloween Costume Ideas gallery).
Danit Marquardt, a Walmart spokeswoman, told KATU, “It was never our intention to offend anyone and we apologize to any of our customers who may have been offended by the name of the costume.”
According to Huffington Post, Walmart has responded to the negative publicity and angry parents by deciding to pull the costume from their stores. Which is good, since the only time we want to be creeped out by little girls in costumes is while watching Toddlers & Tiaras.
