According to Metro Canada, a woman in Alberta, Canada, opened a bottle of Vitamin Water at dinner, only to find the words “YOU RETARD” printed on the bottom of the cap.
Blake Loates and her husband were shocked to see the phrase and immediately snapped a photo of the cap. To add even more insult to the insult, Loates’s sister is developmentally disabled, and her family considers the “R-word” a bad word.
As Metro reports, “The caps are part of a promotion run by the company, displaying a random English word, followed by a random French word. As you can guess, this was a delicious recipe for disaster.
‘Retard’ in French means late or delayed.” It seems like the folks in Coca-Cola’s marketing department might be a bit slow themselves when it comes to understanding cultural sensitivity. Hopefully, for the person responsible for the oversight, the French phrase “YOU RETARD” translates to “YOU FIRED.”
Loates shot off the photo to her father, who spent all night writing letters to Vitamin Water’s parent company Coca-Cola about the offensive phrase. Presumably, some of those letters were “F” and “U.”
Coca-Cola is in touch with the family, offering a sincere apology. Additionally, the remaining bottle caps in their facilities have now been destroyed. Once Coca-Cola takes all the steps to remedy the situation from happening again in the future, hopefully this will all be brightly-colored sugar water under the bridge.
