Stick-on mustaches are great for costume parties and Tom Selleck look-alike contests, but not much else. Unfortunately, a woman at a California hospital was heading to to neither of these things when she woke up from surgery to find a crumb catcher on her upper lip and teardrop stickers on her cheeks.
As Daily Breeze reports, “A Torrance Memorial Medical Center anesthesiologist said he believed this unconscious patient ‘would get a kick’ out of him placing stickers and a mustache on her face during surgery, but the horrified woman has sued him and the hospital for allegedly spreading a cellphone photograph on the Internet.”
It’s bad enough when doctors have to cut through skin in surgery, but it’s downright gut-wrenching to use those same instruments to cut out stickers with the goal of making a patient look like a gang member.
And this wasn’t just any patient.
Prior to the surgery, the woman had been a hospital employee for 13 years. According to the doctor’s statement, he claims to have had a “good working relationship” with her and thought she would find the prank “funny.” She thought differently. Apparently they don’t teach good taste in medical school, because as far as humor goes, this is about as funny as a serial killer’s to-do list.
But that’s not the worst of it. Someone allegedly then took the mustache bash to the internet, where the woman is now doomed to spend the rest of eternity defending herself against a universe full of Reddit dorks.
Next time, the doctor should leave the mustaches where they belong — on misguided hipsters and creepy old janitors.
