When committing a crime, it’s always best to protect your identity. But apparently it’s not more important than that old credo: “Safety first.”
That’s definitely true for 24-year-old Wesley Keith Baxter, who allegedly tried to rob a gas station on Sunday morning while wearing a ski mask over his motorcycle helmet.
Deputies caught him a short distance away from the gas station still wearing both pieces of headgear. Hopefully, he’ll have better luck figuring out how to put on that orange jump suit in jail.
According to a press release by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, Baxter allegedly threatened a customer with a screwdriver during a holdup at the Scotchman Store in in Hubert, North Carolina, after which he attempted to make his big getaway on a moped.
Of course, he didn’t get very far since he had a ski mask stretched over his helmet. Plus, mopeds may be great for getting good gas mileage but are not a smart choice when you’re running from the cops.
The Daily News reported that Baxter is being charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, larceny, assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of kidnapping.
Baxter apologized for the alleged crime and told the officer, “Times were hard and he just needed some money.” With his bond placed at $130,000, times just got a little harder.
