Craigslist is a great place to buy a new couch, find an apartment, or even meet the subject of one’s next retraining order. But, apparently apartment swaps and missed connections are becoming passé. These days, the new trend is to use the web-based classified ad system to buy and sell positive pregnancy tests.
We reported on a woman who was doing this back in May, but the trend continues to grow. So much so that The Daily Dot recently had an article asking, “Why are so many people selling positive pregnancy tests on Craigslist?”
No questions asked, for a going rate of $25 to $40, people around the country can pick up positive pregnancy tests to use however they please. As the Daily Dot reports, “The sellers assure they won’t ask questions and don’t care what the tests are being used for. However, there aren’t very many uses for a positive pregnancy test, outside of confirming a woman is pregnant.”
In fact, a positive pregnancy test has many uses: get a boyfriend to propose, prank a cheating ex or even make some quick cash by getting an ex-lover to cover the costs of an unneeded abortion. Or just buy in bulk to create an avant garde art project made from plastic applicators and pregnant ladies’ dried urine.
While it’s generally a good idea to be supportive of entrepreneurial women who work through their pregnancies, it’s not exactly empowering for them sell positive pregnancy tests to women who will clearly use them for borderline psychotic purposes.
But then again, for the women who swell up like blimps and find themselves vomiting in the toilet a dozen times a day, perhaps it’s a nice perk to allow them to make a few bucks by selling pregnancy tests to strangers to use for nefarious purposes. After all, these women deserve a little something after months of morning sickness, maternity clothes and swollen ankles… just probably not babies.
