Brooklyn College recently whipped out an impressive $107,000 to redesign the school’s logo. All because one person thought it looked too much like a penis.
Karen Gould hired Neustadt Creative Marketing to completely revamp the logo (seen left) shortly after she took over as the school’s president back in 2009. According to the New York Post, insiders claim that Gould’s beef with the old logo was that the clock-tower silhouette looked too phallic. Sounds like a lot of fuss over something kind of small.
The design firm sliced and diced its way into the logo until it wasn’t offensive in any way. As they said on their website, “We replaced a logo that highlighted the campus clock tower with a fresh, youth-oriented design that would help the college stand out in the brand chaos of New York City.” That probably makes more sense than having students design a new logo which might have just made the problem worse.
And if you’re a Brooklyn College student worried about your student loan money going towards paying for the redesign, don’t. A spokesman for Brooklyn College reassured the media that no tuition or public funds were used to pay for the new logo. So one can only assume the “Change the Penis Logo” bake sale went extremely well.
In her own defense, Goud said the college was trying to “to revamp both external and internal communications abilities — not just create a logo — in order to raise the profile of the college.”
Things already looked pretty erect to me.
