The Horseshoe Casino in Cincinnati was in the news recently after they accidentally gave away a million dollars to the wrong guy. Looks like the house doesn’t always win.
According to WCPO, the casino named Kevin Lewis as the winner of a million dollar prize giveaway. The only problem is that there was more than one Kevin Lewis. The prize winning Kevin Lewis was actually sitting at home during the announcement. It wasn’t until sometime after the wrong Lewis, who was in attendance for the announcement, collected his prize that the casino management realized they’d made a mistake. And by mistake, I mean a casino employee is probably going to get a kneecap busted.
You’d think a casino of all places — with all their high tech security and Joe Pesci-like goons scaring off card-counters — would have some means of identifying the right person. Well, it turns out they do, but management can’t really go into much detail. All we know is that they may want to reevaluated it.
Jennifer Kulczycki, Communication Director of the Horseshoe Casino, could only say that they have a “preliminary process which is a pretty short process.” I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that it’s basically spotting the person who reacts after their name is called. Bonus points if he walks up on stage.
Instead of lawyering up, the casino surprised everyone by deciding to award both Kevin Lewises a million dollars. Horseshoe Cincinnati Senior Vice President and General Manager Kevin Kline told reporters that: “This was our blunder.”
Of course a million dollars to a casino is nothing really. They’ll probably earn that money back after one afternoon of retirees playing the nickel slots.
