Though it sounds like something out of a post-apocalyptic horror film, someday it might just come down to this: starve or eat homemade bug larvae straight from your kitchen counter. Dying of hunger never sounded so delicious.
Based on the idea that, in the future, we may need alternative food sources, Austrian industrial designer Katharina Unger designed a tabletop bug incubator that allows bugs to feed off biological waste, creating a protein rich meal for its hungry owner. It’s the perfect dinner for those who like eating things that make ordinary people puke.
Growing insects in your home may be gross enough, but eating the bugs sounds downright nauseating. Still, Mother Nature Network points out that eating insets is nothing new.
“Throughout the ages, cultures the world over have demonstrated a taste for insects and arachnids — crickets, cicadas, ants, scorpions, and the list goes on and on — prepared using various culinary techniques,” the article says.
Maybe that’s true, but then again, those cultures throughout the ages didn’t have fast food restaurants on every street corner. Though, if the world doesn’t start paying attention to food production issues, we might one day find those fast food workers asking, “Would you like a side of flies with that?”
