A group of protestors in North Carolina were unable to dissuade Governor Pat McCrory from signing a bill into law that they claim restricts access to safe abortions. But just because the bill became a law on Monday night doesn’t mean the protesters got nothing for their efforts.
On Tuesday afternoon, the governor emerged from his mansion, flanked by security guards, walked halfway out into the street and handed one of the women a plate of chocolate chip cookies.
According to the Charlotte Observer, McCrory also spoke to one of the protesters, saying, “These are for you. God bless you, God bless, God bless you” — which totally wouldn’t have been weird at all, you know, if the protestor had just sneezed three times.
The gesture angered the group, who responded by returning the cookies uneaten with a note reading, “We want women’s heath care, not cookies.” They also seemed to interpret his gift as patronizing, going on to chant, “Hey Pat, that was rude/you wouldn’t give cookies to a dude.”
Personally, I’m not convinced that giving the protesters cookies was a sexist insult. Maybe he mistakenly thought they were Santa Claus?
