Reynaldo Montijo, a 60-year-old Phoenix man, was caught allegedly lighting trash cans on fire. Arson isn’t a new crime, but the excuse he supposedly gave to police might be a first. Authorities claim, “He said he started it because he was cold.”
A sensible reason, maybe, except the high that day in Phoenix: 115 degrees. Though in his defense, the low was a frigid 91 degrees.
According to the Phoenix New Times, police were alerted after witnesses reported seeing the same man near “multiple fire-engulfed trash cans at bus stops” around the city. Police quickly caught up with the suspect, possibly because if there’s one thing that’s hard to hide in the darkness of night, it’s multiple fire-engulfed trash cans.
“At the end of a trail of matches from one of the fires was a guy passed out under a ‘no trespassing’ sign,” the New Times continues. There, the suspect was found “shirtless, sitting in a wheelchair, and completely surrounded by matches on the ground.”
It’s at this point police claim that Montijo gave his unanticipated excuse. Hey, man, if you’re that cold, at least try putting a shirt on. That’d be most people’s first step.
Montijo was reportedly booked into jail on felony arson charges.
Still no word on what actually inspired his alleged rash of trash can fires. Maybe the devil made him do it? I heard that guy likes a lot of heat.
