Actually, “priceless” is the wrong word. These one-of-a-kind masterpieces were valued at just under $24 million.
Seven pieces in all were stolen from the Kunsthal museum in the Netherlands last year in what some have called the “heist of the century.” Yet, their final resting place will be Romania, where one of the thieves mothers allegedly burned them in an attempt to destroy this “evidence.”
And you thought O.J.’s glove was valuable.
UPI reports, “The thieves were unable to sell the paintings and [the] mother panicked after investigators searched her house in February.” The ashes “have been sent to Romania’s National Museum of History for a technical analysis” where scientists are sure to confirm that, yes, these are now completely worthless.
Possibly even more discouraging news is all the destruction went for naught. Despite her valiant efforts with a torch, her son, Radu Dogaru, was arrested and police say she faces 10 to 20 years in jail.
It just goes to show that mother doesn’t always know best.
