Andrew Vickers, a UK-based artist, used an original Avengers issue number one comic book as raw material for a paper mache art project. The rare comic was valued to be worth almost $15,000.
Steve Eyre, a comic book store owner and fan, spotted the issue, as well as a few other valuable comics used as raw materials for the piece. The total value for Vicker’s medium of choice: $30,000.
Vickers, ironically enough, used the comic books to create a man-sized statue called “Paper Boy,” a paper mache super hero for an art show in Sheffield, England. However, in the artist’s defense, he found the rare comics in a box discarded at a local dump. All the Rob Liefeld comic books out there and this guy manages to find the one box filled with valuable comics. Life is cruel indeed.
After being told about the mix-up, Vicker’s reportedly chuckled and said, “To be honest I’m shocked but money has not got such a value to me. I think it is funny.”
Yes, funnier than all the Archie comics in the world.
