Now that CSI: Reddit has officially run it’s course, another dumb Internet trend has been picking up steam: Confusing the Czech Republic with Chechnya.
That’s right, after the identities of the Boston bombers were revealed, people started confusing the two countries on Twitter and Facebook. Obviously, it’s been an uphill battle explaining that the Czech Republic and Chechnya are two completely different countries, not to mention about 2,000 miles apart, because it involves numbers and geography. The two things we Americans are really bad at.
The Czech Republic’s ambassador to the United States and temporary 3rd grade geography teacher, Petr Gandalovic called it, “a most unfortunate misunderstanding.” Apparently, it did little to calm the social media saber rattlers because there are still calls to invade anyway. Better safe than sorry, I guess.
Here are just a few samples of the “unfortunate misunderstanding” from Twitter and Facebook that was posted on publicshaming.tumblr.com.
So how do we prevent this embarrassing Czechs mix from happening again? I’m thinking Google Maps would be a good place to start.
