A recent article in DNAinfo.com reported on a new trend among New York parents called “elimination communication” or “EC”. What it really means is letting your baby pop a squat wherever.
Although, if you’re going to have your baby go au naturel then there’s no better place to live than New York. You could say that many New Yorkers are expert EC practitioners since you can’t really go very far without seeing a hobo eliminating on the sidewalk.
Practitioners of EC have abandoned the use of diapers and instead follow their baby around with a bucket. Is this eco-friendly or freakin’ crazy?
Well first, to get their kids to potty on command, EC parents will use some good old fashion Pavlovian Conditioning. They’ll make a “sisss” sound at their baby to help get things going but as you’d expect, there are a lot of “misses.” Other parents will just watch their kids like a hawk and wait for visual cues. Even that doesn’t work all the time since babies have about as much control over their body as a frat boy at a bar on his 21st birthday.
There are even groups that have formed and get together to talk about the latest EC news, share potty techniques, or discuss the latest episode of “How I Met Your Mother.” Of course, participants are asked to bring their own potty (i.e. a bucket) or a towel (i.e. a cloth diaper) to catch any spills.
EC advocates are hoping this isn’t just another fad like those toe running shoes. Andrea Olson, author of “EC Simplified: Infant Potty Training Made Easy” is working on raising awareness for the cause by organizing the first diaper-free week which is being held from April 21st – 27th.
Watch your step.
