Regarding the national anthem performed at President Obama’s second inauguration everyone is asking: Was it pre-baked and faked or fresh and fo’ real? Journalists who were present reported they found it odd that they were next to the band but couldn’t hear them playing and a Marine band spokesperson said the Beyoncé anthem was pre-recorded. But now a Marine band corps band statement contradicts this and says, “No one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded.”
I find it amazing that no one in the band actually knows if they played or not. I mean, yes, marching band was traumatic for me — I had to wear a scratchy blue and gold polyester suit while other high school girls got to shake their pom poms — so I can see how you might try to block it. But really?
Fellow superstar soul sisters have the singer’s back. Aretha Franklin said it wasn’t good singing weather. To that I say, girl, I played a rented dented flute on blustery days without a mic — good singing weather my spotty pink butt. Jennifer Lopez said pre-records guard against “that terrible slapback” you get in arenas and stadiums. To that I say, girl, something about you saying “terrible slapback” is really unintentionally sexy.
