Watch out Broadway, because Mike Tyson is coming to town! No seriously, WATCH OUT! Yes, Mike Tyson actually wrote a play and by 'write' I mean his wife wrote it. And by 'his wife wrote it' I mean she transcribed his incoherent ramblings about becoming a vegan into script format.
Fortunately, Spike Lee is directing the show so it shouldn't be a total trainwreck. Who knows? It could actually do pretty well, probably not Rent well but well enough in its own right. And honestly, I think the theatre-going crowd is ready for something a little different and Mike Tyson is definitely a little different. People just love watching this guy because they never know if they're going to get the he-seems-friendly-but-don't-make-any-sudden-movements Mike Tyson or if they're getting the on-again-off-again cannibal Mike Tyson.
Personally, I doubt that I'll ever go see the show because I was hoping it would be a musical version of his Nintendo classic Mike Tyson's Punch Out. I mean, how much cooler would that be than watching him fumble around trying to remember his lines? Plus, if his show is anything like this interview, it's going to be more awkward than watching a high school production of Hello Dolly.
