British shin-kicking is painful to watch

Share

For some reason, about 400 years ago the British were desperate to find their own take on Roman-style wrestling (maybe they didn't like the idea of rolling around half naked with another guy). So they came up with shin-kicking, which looks more like a drunken pub brawl than an actual sport, but don't tell that to any of these 'athletes' because suggesting that it's nothing more than two guys kicking each other really annoys them. One of the judges even fought back by saying, "It's a lot like wrestling but with a lot of contact below the knees." So how is not just shin-kicking again?

Even though several thousands were cheering on the shin-kickers, it was still hard to take this seriously. Shin-kicking was just one event in the Cotswold Olimpick Games which also included potato sack racing, the wheel barrel race and tug-of-war. At least it sounded a lot more entertaining than figure skating.
