It's no coincidence that most of today's teen books today all look and sound similar, since writers and publishers all want to make money.
Sure, they want to tell great stories too but the temptation to make huge piles of Hollywood money is just too great to ignore for most people in this competitive and ruthless market. And with the success of the Twilight, The Hunger Games and Harry Potter books, the pressure is on for authors and publishers to produce books that sell. And what sells big are stories about kid wizards, teens surviving in a dystopian future and angst-ridden vampires. I'm surprised no one has made a book combining all three!
After spanning seven books and eight movies, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series has become the template for a teen book success. It spawned a thousand protagonists with round glasses which was playfully illustrated on the cover of rip-offs everywhere. Unfortunately, most of these imitators didn't cast the same spell over readers as Harry Potter did.
And with Twilight-style vampire books at a saturation point you may hope to find refuge in the classics. Unfortunately, even they're not safe from publishers desperate to squeeze a few extra bucks out of reprinting older books like Pride and Prejudice using melodramatic red apples and flowers on the cover. Even William Shakespeare himself can't escape the poor Photoshop work you see on the cover of these rip-offs.
