The world's greatest vigilante isn't Batman or the Punisher. It's a 57-year-old paraplegic computer salesman named Frank Hebert.
His 3-year-old granddaugther asked him to protect her from her stepfather, Joshua Hardy. While the grandaughter and her mother went to the police to file a formal complaint of child molestation, Hebert lured Hardy to his Mac PC Sales and Service Shop in Vineyard Haven, MA.
Before the stepfather arrived Hebert called police and told them to meet him at his workplace. Then he armed himself with a baseball bat. After the stepfather arrived Hebert told him the police were on their way and he was to remain seated. Hardy laughed at Hebert and rose from his chair to leave. That's when Hebert cracked him.
Hardy is now in custody, facing indecent assault and battery charges involving his stepdaughter and another victim.
This was a citizen's arrest done right. He wasn't looking to take the law into his own hands. He had to do it to protect his granddaughter. According to Hebert he grabbed the bat for protection, not revenge. And most importantly, he called police. He didn't want to get time in a room alone with this guy. He just wanted him locked up and in order for that to happen he needed Hardy to stay put until the police arrived. If that meant knocking him to the ground in the process, then so be it.
Finally, what makes this the most awesome takedown ever, is that he's paraplegic. A car crash left him in a wheelchair with only partial use of his arms. This guy makes DareDevil look like a pansy.
In an interesting twist, the local DA is charging Hebert with felony assault which has a penalty of 10 years in jail. Good luck finding a jury that'll declare that guy guilty, Mr. Prosecutor.
