A recent study reports that British scientists have discovered that chickens may in fact experience empathy. The study showed that chickens displayed an elevated heart rate and change of eye temperature when their baby chicks were exposed to a puff of air. What? Baby chicks? Where? I want some nuggets right now. This study does nothing except make me hungry.
Based on this research are we supposed to take this as further indication that we shouldn't be eating them? Feelings or not, I eat chicken because I don't have empathy. I kind of thought that was understood so please stop with the findings because that's not the real problem.
It's ludicrous to keep trying to deduce which animals have feelings, what kind and how much. If you eat a barn yard's worth of animals every day yet feel terror and distress at the thought of a kitty being eaten, you're an idiot because all animals have feelings. We just choose to ignore this fact completely and these studies serve no purpose.
When we are so far removed from the process in which animals are raised, slaughtered, packaged, frozen, delivered and then prepared, it's hard to even be sure what you're eating other than something delicious. That's how these food industry giants have succeeded in brainwashing us.
It doesn't matter if a chicken can think and remember certain types of hierarchies if we don't think twice about what we are eating. I could have a pet chicken and I would name it Fingers. This is my chicken, Fingers. They're not animals anymore because of advertising and packaging. That chicken could be my best friend, always remember my birthday and lend an empathetic ear when I was down in the dumps and I'd still eat the sh*t out of it, that's how dumb I am.
Even if I decide to stop eating meat, it's never going to be because I care about chickens. It will be because I am trying to be healthier for my own selfish purposes that cares not for the well-being of fowl. The only thing that ever straightens people out is watching those horrifying videos of animals being slaughtered inhumanely and that usually wears off within a month. Either that or we could put in place a new system where if you want to eat some meat, well then you have to slaughter it yourself like in the olden days. That would definitely scare me off of pigs, cows and ducks but no one is ever going to put us up to that task ever again, so we're off the hook. We have evolved too far as a society of convenience. Animals are losing and they know it.
