Calvin College, a Christian liberal arts school in Michigan, put out a press release this week rescinding their October invitation to the indy rock band "The New Pornographers" because "the irony of the band's name was impossible to explain to many." They go on to explain:
The band's name, to some, is mistakenly associated with pornography. Consequently, Calvin, to some, was mistakenly associated with pornography. Neither the college nor the band endorses pornography.
GOOD THINKING.
Pornography is bad. Even though that band has nothing to do with pornography. Maybe they should book somebody who is completely wholesome, like Courtney Love. Or Madonna. Better still, if people in their school seem to have such a tough time understanding irony, maybe Alanis Morissette?
Either way, this doesn't bode well for a few other inoffensive indy bands I can think of.
Sorry, Bush.
