Mark McGwire, former slugger and admitted steroid user for the St Louis Cardinals and current hitting coach for the club, was last mentioned in this space for being the biggest beneficiary of the Tiger Woods scandal.
McGwire was in the news again yesterday after being singled out and praised by one of the biggest names in baseball, which would be great, if that name wasn't…Barry Bonds. Quoted in a story for the AP, the current single-season home run leader in baseball praised the former single-season home run leader in baseball thusly:
"I have a really good friendship with Mark McGwire. I'm proud of him…We've had a great relationship throughout our entire lives and throughout our career. I'm proud of what he did. I'm happy for him."
Bonds was not praising McGwire for his steroid use, but "for returning to baseball as the St. Louis Cardinals' hitting coach and for admitting his use of performance-enhancing drugs." Bonds, for his part has never admitted "knowingly" taking drugs, despite the fact that when he says anything, our minds drift to steroids quicker than if it had come from the mouth of an adorable children's mascot named "Mr .Needles."
McGwire responded to Bonds' comments by saying "It's very cool. Barry is a great player, was a great player in this game, many MVPs…It makes me feel really good." This proves once again that if McGwire is the best in the world at anything, it might be keeping his mouth shut.
