Shawn Estes (pictured) was unemployed, down on his luck and staying with his ex-wife Michelle Mears in her Cape Coral, FL home.

But that situation was better than where he is now, which is on his way to jail, charged with stealing several items including a new TV.

Estes, 38,  allegedly broke into a house down the street from his ex, stole a  TV, DVD player and jewelry, sold his ill-gotten booty at a nearby pawn shop a day later and then foolishly disposed of the sales receipts in a pile of garbage just two doors down from where the merchandise was stolen.

Detectives arrested Estes after finding the receipts.

Mears, for her part, doesn't seem especially broken up to have lost her housemate. As she told the local NBC news crew, "I know he was dumb, but not that dumb."
