Conspiracy Theory, The Soundtrack
In the conspiracy world, most information is conveyed through newspaper articles, blogs, or videos. But if you ever wanted to explore the world’s mysteries in song, you now have the chance to do so. Matt Farley, also known as The Paranormal Song Warrior, has produced an album, Believe: Exciting Songs About Shockingly Mysterious Stuff, which covers topics from Area 51 to the Chupabra. We spoke to the Paranormal Song Warrior about his work and inspiration.
Norma Lee: Why did you decide to call yourself the Paranormal Song Warrior?
Paranormal Song Warrior: I release different styles of music under different names, depending on the theme of the songs. When I considered doing paranormal songs, I noticed that there weren’t many songs on these topics–so I consider myself a warrior who is fighting to bring the paranormal debate into the music scene!
NL: What was your initial inspiration to write conspiracy-related songs?
PSW: I’ve always been interested in conspiracies, and I tend to write songs about unusual topics. So, it was probably inevitable that I’d eventually do this album. I tend to write about topics that other songwriters overlook—and there definitely aren’t enough paranormal- and conspiracy-related songs.
NL: What has been your favorite conspiracy theory to sing about?
PSW: I really enjoyed singing about the spaceship-moon theory.
(Editor’s Note: One spaceship-moon conspiracy theory is that the moon is actually an alien spacecraft that has been circling and monitoring Earth for centuries. The other, which we covered, is that Apollo 11 never reached the moon and the whole landing was faked.)
NL: What is the first conspiracy-related song you wrote?
PSW: I think it was “The Aliens Built the Pyramids”, which is my favorite song on the album.
NL: Do you believe in of the conspiracy theories in your work?
PSW: I believe in some more than others. “Area 51″, “I Believe in Time Travel”, “The Moon is a Space Ship”, and “The Aliens Built the Pyramids” are all topics that make some sense to me. I am less impressed with the validity of “The Well to Hell” and “The Sea Serpent of Seneca Lake”, among others.
NL: If you could pick one conspiracy to be true, which would it be?
PSW: If it turned out that the moon was an ancient spaceship, that would be wonderful!
NL: Have you ever been harassed by the government or other secret groups because of the songs you write?
PSW: Not yet, but now that I’m appearing on your website, they might be more aware of the fact that I’m out there. Any day now…
NL: Who killed JFK?
PSW: I don’t know. Someone needs to hurry up and build a time machine so we can go back and find out.
