The Biggest Edward Snowden Conspiracy Theories
To those not bothered by government spying, he’s just another wacko who hurt our efforts in the War on Terror. But some murky details surrounding his origins and job details have many wondering if Snowden is who he claims to be. Not to mention that he’s got a name tailor-made for a Hollywood spy flick.
Some conspiracy theorists are peddling scenarios that present Snowden as a do-gooder/victim of aggressive government bullying. Another faction questions his motives and wonder if perhaps he isn’t just some pawn in a bigger deception than PRISM could ever be.
Below are the best theories from each camp.
Good Guy Snowden
1. Enemy Governments Helped Him
Hong Kong blamed faulty government paperwork for why they let Snowden through airport security, but many critics think that it, along with countries like Russia and Ecuador, China helped Snowden in order to sock it to the world’s biggest bully…
2. Snowden Has Info That Implicates Government Officials
Investigative journalist Tony Gosling believes that the government is after Snowden for more than just leaking spy secrets. According to Gosling, Snowden might have incriminating evidence that could land bankers, politicians, and the world’s elite in jail.
3. Secret Agents Have Already Killed Him
Rumors have swirled that Snowden is already dead, perhaps the victim of a drone strike.
Shadow Figure Snowden
1. Triple Agent Snowden
Obama’s approval ratings have dropped after the NSA scandal. Political analyst Webster Tarpley thinks that the CIA used Snowden as a triple agent to put Obama in a position where he would have to help his public image by assisting the struggling rebels in Syria. The CIA, for various reasons, wants to be involved in the conflict there.
2. False Flag To Rein In Whistleblowers
With the rampant media coverage showing Snowden being prosecuted to no end, potential whistleblowers will likely be afraid to step forward.
At least that’s what author Naomi Klein believes, making her an Edward Snowden truther, according to the internet rumor mill. Thee truthers believe that Snowden is a pawn being used by government powers to further oppress the freedom of information. With Snowden as a sacrificial lamb, the government won’t have to worry about dissidents leaking sensitive information in the future.
3. Chinese Spy All Along
Prior to the PRISM revelations, the U.S. was trying to convince China to give up its spying on American computers. But after Snowden’s dirty work, China no longer feels ethical pressure to stop its espionage program, since the U.S. is guilty of the same crimes.
Given Snowden’s shifty ties to Chinese authorities from the get-go, many believe he was a Chinese spy since becoming a CIA operative.
And by the way, Snowden’s revelations were a waste of a good leak, in a way, since he didn’t tell us anything we weren’t telling you about years ago.
