10 Jimmy Hoffa Disappearance Conspiracy Theories
There’s a new possible lead in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, the president of the Teamsters Union who went missing in 1975, and the FBI is on the case.
In what is probably the octogenarian mobster’s idea of crank call, a source is claiming he knows the location of Hoffa’s body. As a result, the FBI is combing an area just outside of Detroit, but just to save you et a couple minutes of nerve-wracking suspense, they aren’t going to find him. They never do.
But before you go, here are 10 possible reasons why they won’t find the former Teamsters President where they’re looking for him:
10. Hoffa is in Brazil
Much like Elvis and Jesus, some conspiracy theorists believe Jimmy Hoffa didn’t die. Instead, rumor has it that Hoffa escaped the clutches of the law and rival mob factions by running off to Brazil with a go-go dancer. If he was still alive, Hoffa would be 100 years old, so the odds of him being alive to this date are slim; however, it’s plausible that he lived for years after 1975.
Oddly enough, Hoffa was born in Brazil, Indiana, which could be evidence of conspiracy theorists confusing their geography and the cruel sense of irony that goes into picking the names of towns in Indiana.
9. Abducted by Aliens
In 1977, Tom Dawson, a retired resident of Georgia, claimed he was abducted by aliens. During their requisite probing and prodding of Dawson, he claims he saw a bright light and a voice that called out “I am Jimmy Hoffa!” three times before being cut off. The only people who believe this story can be found lurking in the shadows of Reddit.
8. Whacked By the CIA
William Bufalino, a lawyer for the Teamsters Union, claimed that Hoffa was killed by the CIA because he knew of a mob plot to assassinate Fidel Castro (in return for gambling rights in Havana.) This theory is highly suspect, because if the mafia had been hired to take out Castro, he would likely have been dead long ago.
7. He Killed JFK
While president of the Teamsters Union, Hoffa was under investigation for federal racketeering charges. Some conspiracy theories suggest that Hoffa ordered the killing of President Kennedy to send a message to attorney general, Robert Kennedy and that RFK retaliated by having him executed. No connection between Hoffa and the Kennedy assassination has ever been found.
6. He Killed Robert Kennedy
Robert Kennedy, the attorney general who successfully sent Hoffa to jail, was assassinated in 1968 by Sirhan Sirhan the night after he defeated Senator McCarthy in the California primary. Conspiracy theorists speculate that Hoffa ordered the hit on Kennedy after working out a deal with Richard Nixon. Nixon later pardoned Hoffa and Hoffa allegedly donated half a million dollars to Nixon’s campaign.
Some theories even posit that Sirhan Sirhan had mob connections. Despite the rumors, no complicity between Hoffa and Sirhan Sirhan has ever been found and, despite the rumor cropping up every year when the Hoffa disappearance rumors begin, no one has suggested a connection between this story and Hoffa’s demise.
5. The Second Location
Tony Zerilli, an alleged gangster, says he was not involved in Hoffa’s assassination but has vague information about what happened to Hoffa’s corpse. Zerilli told cops in early 2013 that Hoffa was buried in a shallow grave in Oakland County, Michigan, not far from where Hoffa’s car was discovered. He added that plans had been hatched to move the body, since it was likely police would search the field, but the conspirators chickened out, left it there, and were rewarded when police somehow overlooked the burial ground.
4. Hoffa Was in Witness Protection
Hoffa’s sudden disappearance in 1975 has led to numerous theories about his whereabouts, but none so enduring as the theory that he is holed away in federal witness protection, providing the FBI with a wealth of information about the Mafia. If this is even remotely true, the FBI is staging an elaborate cover-up by constantly digging up Detroit looking for him.
3. Hoffa Was Sold As Scrap Metal
Mafia hitman Richard Kuklinski claimed in his 2009 memoir The Iceman: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer that he whacked Hoffa with a hunting knife. According to a summary of the book on Wikipedia, Kuklinski said he “burned the body for ‘a half hour or so’ in a 55-gallon drum, then welded it shut and buried it in a junkyard. He goes on to describe how, when an accomplice began to talk to the authorities, the drum was dug up and placed in the trunk of a car, which was then compacted and sold along with hundreds of other compacted cars, and subsequently shipped to Japan as scrap metal for manufacturing new vehicles.”
2. Under Giants Stadium
In the great game of “Where is Jimmy Hoffa?,” no answer is more enduring than “he’s buried under Giants Stadium.” Giants Stadium was under construction in 1975 when Hoffa disappeared. As a result, conspiracy theorists surmised that Hoffa’s body was entombed somewhere in the stadium. Giants Stadium was demolished in 2010 and no remains were ever found. The theory was also put to the test by Mythbusters and no body was uncovered.
1. Hot Dog
The mystery of Jimmy Hoffa is enduring and fraught with conspiracy. But perhaps the grossest theory on the whereabouts of Hoffa’s body is that after he was killed in a mob hit, his body was dumped at a hot dog factory and he was turned into everyone’s favorite summertime treat. Of course, this theory is only held by internet commenters and your crazy uncle. But it does beg the question, what is in a hot dog and why are they so delicious?
