Conspiratorium: You won't believe what you don't know.

Island Near Australia No Longer Exists

Losing your keys is understandable, but losing an island? That’s not supposed to happen in the Google Earth era.

Sandy Island, which is supposedly located between Australia and New Caledonia, doesn’t actually exist, according to BBC News. But the island, which is on Google Maps and has been featured in publications for over a decade, is alleged by a group of Australian scientists to simply not exist.

The BBC reports that the Australian scientists wanted to investigate the island because of the water depth in the area...

“We wanted to check it out because the navigation charts on board the ship showed a water depth of 1,400m in that area – very deep,” Dr Seton, from the University of Sydney, told the AFP news agency after the 25-day voyage.

“It’s on Google Earth and other maps so we went to check and there was no island. We’re really puzzled. It’s quite bizarre.”

Conspiracy theorists on the site Truth Behind the Scenes suspect that the island is a CIA cover for a large ship that the US didn’t want seen on satellites.

Or perhaps as the site Mysterious Universe alleges, a parallel universe has “temporal resonance” with our own. Perhaps the Australian scientists are trying to make the island disappear so aliens can use it as a base of operations or that rising sea levels swallowed the island whole. Or maybe this was the island that Scaramanga (the villain in the Bond movie “The Man with the Golden Gun,” duh) used to build his solar laser and after the island exploded cartographers foolishly forgot to take it off the map.

However, it’s far more likely that the island was lost the same way I lose most of my own things. Getting tipsy and reorganizing the linen closet.
