Who Framed DSK?
It's been months since the trail went cold in the DSK affair, but suddenly there are new rumors in the case of the French politico busted for rape in New York.
Conspiracy theories about Dominique Strauss-Kahn are nothing new: in an article written for The New York Review of Books, journalist Edward Jay Epstein suggested that the allegations of sexual assault in the Dominique Strauss-Kahn case could have been fabricated by President Sarkozy's right-wing UMP Party.
Until his arrest, DSK was the frontrunner for the Socialist Presidential nomination in France, causing many to wonder if perhaps the ruling party set him up in hopes that a sex scandal would bring his political career to a crashing halt.
But the new twist in the story is even more disturbing: The National Post, CNN, and other news sources have picked up a new story today that points to a sinister campaign to steal DSK's cell phone, disable its GPS and then capture the politician at the airport by pretending to offer it back to him. Now why would anyone want to do that?
Epstein's new information goes like this: firstly, DSK may have been warned by a member of the UMP that his cell phone had been hacked. Secondly, in the hotel security video, two hotel employees are shown walking from the security office where Ms. Diallo (the maid who claimed DSK had assaulted her) had just filed a complaint. The two men "high-five each other, clap their hands, and do what looks like an extraordinary dance of celebration that lasts for three minutes." The Sofitel Hotel responded that the two employees "categorically denied this exchange had any link whatsoever with Mr. Strauss-Kahn."
(The new rumors drew an adamant denial from the UMP Party leader Jean-François Copé, who said "the plot argument is grotesque.")
Though Epstein's piece stops short of unveiling an actual conspiracy, it does point out a number of unanswered questions from the day in question and the subsequent trial. Though the charges against DSK were dismissed, it's undeniable that his quest for the Presidency has been significantly derailed. What do you think really happened?
